15 Minutes. 15 years. The morning habit that changes everything.

For the past 15 years, I’ve started almost every morning the same way.

Not with coffee.
Not with emails.
But with a simple habit of rolling out my mat for morning yoga.

Now that I’m 40, I couldn’t be more grateful for that choice.

My body feels open, my energy steadier, and my mind clear before the day even begins.

And here’s the best part:
It didn’t take hours of practice to get here.
Most days, I spend just 15 minutes moving and breathing.

And research now shows that these 15 minutes are more than enough to transform how you feel physically and mentally:

What science show

  • Even one session makes a difference:
In controlled trials, researchers measured cortisol (your stress hormone) and found it dropped after just one 15 minute yoga session.

They also recorded faster blood pressure recovery after a stressful task and a noticeable lift in mood compared to the group that didn’t move. So yes, your body and mind respond right away.

  • Daily practice compounds:
In another study, office workers who added just 10 minutes of yoga per day reported less stiffness, fewer aches, and improved mood after only four weeks.

Participants also described feeling calmer and more resilient throughout their day.
  • On the other end, skipping those 10–15 minutes in the morning comes at a price:

    • Stiffness builds up → more daily aches and pains.
    • Energy stays low → harder to focus and show up fully.
    • Stress piles on → affecting mood, sleep, and even weight.

Doing nothing isn’t neutral, it makes life feel heavier. A few minutes of movement makes it lighter.

3 things that made my morning yoga habit last 15+ years

People often ask how I’ve managed to keep this habit going for so long and still look forward to it every morning.

It comes down to three simple things:

    1. A set time.
For me, it’s 7am. Same time, every day. When it becomes part of your rhythm, it’s no longer a decision, it’s just what you do.

    2. A ready space.
My mat is always out in the same spot. No setup, no excuses. The fewer steps between you and practice, the easier it is to start.

    3. A routine waiting for me.
I never waste time wondering what to do. I know the flow I’ll follow, and sometimes I let a video guide me. That way, I can simply show up and move.

These little anchors turned yoga from “something I should do” into “something I can’t imagine starting my day without.”
