4 Habits That Keep Me Fit as I Get Older

There’s a big myth out there: as we get older, our bodies are supposed to fall apart.

People think joint pain is just part of aging.
Or that gaining weight and needing lots of meds is normal.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Sure, our bodies experience some wear and tear, kind of like an old car.

But think of those classic cars you see at car shows, still running perfectly even after 60, 70, or 100 years.

What’s their secret? Maintenance!
And our bodies work the same way.

With the right care, we can keep running smoothly for years.

Here’s how I do it:

1. Keep Your Range of Motion

As we age, the first thing we start to lose is our ability to move freely.

Hips get tight.
Shoulders stiffen up.
Lower backs start to ache.

Why?
Because our flexibility shrinks, making simple movements like bending and twisting harder.

“If you don’t use it, you lose it!”

When we stop using our full range of motion, our bodies get stiff, and our joints start to break down.

That’s when problems like arthritis kick in.

The fix? Stretching.

Stretching regularly keeps our muscles long and our joints moving smoothly.

I stretch for at least 10 minutes every day to keep my body feeling loose and pain-free.

2. Keep Your Muscles Strong

You’ve probably heard that we lose muscle as we age.
It’s called sarcopenia.

But guess what?
We can still grow muscle, even if we’re older!

Strength training helps keep those muscles strong, no matter your age.

Why does muscle matter?
Muscles help us do everyday stuff like standing, walking, and lifting.
Without strong muscles, even simple things get hard…

Weak thigh muscles can make you more likely to fall.
Weak core? That can lead to back pain and, even embarrassing bladder issues.

To stay strong, I do resistance training at least twice a week.

Sometimes it’s bodyweight exercises, other times it’s using bands or weights. It’s non-negotiable!

3. Keep a Healthy Body Fat Percentage

Yep, our metabolism slows down as we get older. That means we burn fewer calories, even when we’re just sitting around.

Add in muscle loss and stiffness, and it’s easy to see why weight can creep up.

And let’s be real:
when we’re less active, it’s way too tempting to snack while watching TV.

How do I keep a healthy body fat percentage?

  1. I keep my muscles strong and my body flexible so I can stay active and burn more calories (just like explained in the previous steps)
  2. I eat a diet packed with protein, veggies, and legumes: Protein helps keep my muscles from shrinking, and veggies and legumes are low in calories and great for digestion and overall health.

Quick tip: Eat real, whole foods, watch your portions and drink lots of water!

4. Keep Your Heart Healthy

Heart health is just as important as strong muscles and flexible joints.
That’s where cardio comes in!

My favorite? Walking.

Brisk walking for 30 minutes a day helps keep my heart healthy, lowers my blood pressure, and boosts my mood.

Plus, it’s easy on my joints.

I also do one cardio workout a week—like cycling or a quick HIIT session.

It keeps my heart strong and gives me the energy I need for all of life’s adventures.

💭 Final Thought

If you feel like your body isn’t what it used to be and you “feel” every year that passes by, I want you to know it doesn’t have to be this way.

Start by adopting one habit at a time -

Try 10 minutes of stretching a day.
Go for a 15-minute brisk walk.
Do 10 push-ups against a wall or 10 squats every day.

The key is to be proactive and stay consistent.

The next 10 years will pass by anyway… the question is, how will you get there?

Have a wonderful day ✨
