Protein matters more than you think especially after 40

If you’re still treating protein like an “optional extra”…it’s time for a reset.

Protein isn’t just for gym bros and bodybuilders. It’s essential for your energy, hormones, immune system and metabolism.

Let’s break the myths and show you what protein really does 💪

Most people think of protein as “that thing bodybuilders eat to get big.” But protein is way more than a muscle-builder.

It’s one of the most essential nutrients for your body to thrive…especially as you get older, go through hormonal shifts, or want to feel energized, strong, and mentally sharp.

Let’s break it down:

❌ What people think protein does:

  • Builds muscle

    (that’s it)

✅ What protein actually does:

Protein plays a role in nearly every system in your body. It…

🛠️ Repair & Maintenance

  • Supports collagen production (for stronger skin, joints, and connective tissue)
  • Facilitates tissue repair (muscles, skin, gut lining, etc.)
  • Supports healthy skin, hair, and nails
  • Supports bone health (especially important as bone density declines with age)

🧠 Brain, Hormones & Mood

  • Contributes to hormone production (critical during perimenopause and menopause)
  • Regulates mood and mental health (via neurotransmitter production)
  • Boosts cognitive function (focus, memory, and clarity)

🔥 Metabolism & Appetite Control

  • Aids appetite management (keeps you full longer, reduces cravings)
  • Promotes metabolic health (helps keep your metabolism active)
  • Provides steady energy (yes, protein can be used as fuel too)
  • Transports and stores nutrients efficiently

🛡️ Defense & Longevity

  • Enhances immune function (helps fight illness and recover faster)
  • Supports detoxification (especially liver and cellular health)

This is why getting enough protein daily is non-negotiable.

⚠️ Why this matters even more for women over 40

During perimenopause and beyond, your protein needs go up, but most women unintentionally eat less.

Between intermittent fasting, being busy, skipping meals, or just not having an appetite in the morning… protein often gets pushed to the side.

But that has a cost.

Without enough protein, your body struggles to:

  • Regulate hunger and cravings
  • Balance hormones
  • Build or maintain muscle
  • Keep your metabolism from slowing down
  • Stay mentally sharp through demanding days

💡 So what should you do?

Make protein a priority, not an afterthought.

A few simple rules:

  • Aim for 25-30g of protein at each main meal.

That means breakfast too. don’t skip it.

  • Start your day with protein, not toast or cereal

(example: eggs + sautéed veggies, protein smoothie, Greek yogurt with nuts)

  • Center every meal around protein, then add veggies, healthy fats, and slow carbs

  • Don’t stress about perfection.

Even a little more protein per meal can make a big difference.

🧠 Remember this:

Protein isn’t just for building muscle.

It’s the foundation your body relies on for strength, hormone balance, immune support, brain function, and steady energy.

It’s one of the most underrated nutrients in a healthy lifestyle, and the older you get, the more essential it becomes.

So if your goals include:

  • Feeling full and satisfied after meals
  • Having steady energy throughout the day
  • Supporting mental clarity and focus
  • Aging with strength, not frailty
  • Toning and reshaping your body

Then upgrading your protein intake is one of the smartest moves you can make.

Have a wonderful day ✨
