You’re missing magnesium (and feeling it)

Feeling tense, low on energy or not sleeping well lately?
You might be missing one simple thing: magnesium.

In this issue, I’m breaking down why it matters (way beyond just sleep), who needs it most, how to tell if you’re low, and which type is best for your body.

If you’ve ever woken up in the middle of the night with a cramp in your calf—or had your leg seize up mid-yoga class—you know how frustrating (and painful) it can be.

That was me not long ago.

I was eating a balanced Mediterranean diet… moving daily… staying hydrated…

But something still felt off—especially at night.
My muscles were tense.
I wasn’t sleeping deeply.
And the cramps kept showing up at the worst times.

So I did a little digging.
And what I found made me say:
“Why didn’t I start this sooner?”

🧠 The mineral no one talks about (but everyone needs)

We often think of magnesium as “the sleep mineral.”
And yes—it does help you sleep.

But that’s just the beginning.
Magnesium is involved in over 300 reactions in the body.

It helps you:

✔ Reduce inflammation
✔ Improve bone density
✔ Maintain heart rhythm
✔ Ease anxiety and tension
✔ Support hormone balance
✔ Regulate your stress response
✔ Promote deeper, more restful sleep
✔ Keep muscles functioning properly
✔ Produce energy at the cellular level
✔ Support brain, nerve, and thyroid health

But, most people aren’t getting enough.
Even those eating “healthy.”

🥗 Why Diet Isn’t Always Enough

Even with a well-balanced Mediterranean-style diet, you’re likely getting only 150–250 mg of magnesium a day—which is below the recommended 320–400 mg.

That’s because:

– Modern soils are depleted of minerals
– Stress, caffeine, alcohol, and intense exercise all burn through magnesium faster
– Most people don’t eat enough leafy greens, legumes, seeds, and nuts consistently

💊 So, Should You Take Magnesium?

If you:

  • Struggle with muscle cramps
  • Feel wired but tired at night
  • Are going through perimenopause
  • Have trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Feel stiff or sore after simple movements
  • Train hard or live with constant stress…

Magnesium might be the missing piece.

I started taking 200mg of magnesium glycinate before bed and the results were immediate.

The cramps disappeared.
I started sleeping like a log.
And I woke up actually feeling rested.

⚡ Not All Magnesium Is Created Equal

There are lots of types out there—and they don’t all work the same way. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Magnesium Glycinate
Calming and easy on the stomach.
Best for: anxiety, poor sleep, muscle tension.
Who it's for: Anyone feeling wired, stressed, or restless at night (this is what I take).

  • Magnesium Citrate
Supports digestion and has a mild laxative effect.
Best for: occasional constipation or sluggish digestion.
Who it's for: If your gut needs a little help moving things along.=

  • Magnesium Malate
Supports energy production and helps reduce muscle pain.
Best for: fatigue, fibromyalgia, post-workout soreness.

  • Magnesium Threonate
Penetrates the blood-brain barrier to support cognitive function.
Best for: brain fog, memory, mental clarity.
Who it's for: Anyone feeling mentally cloudy or looking to boost focus.

  • Magnesium Oxide
Most common and affordable, but poorly absorbed.
Best for: short-term use as a laxative.
Who it's for: Not ideal for magnesium deficiency—use with caution.
Who it's for: Active people or those who wake up feeling sore and drained.

If you’re just starting, glycinate is your best bet—especially if your goal is better sleep, fewer cramps, or more calm.

📏 How Much Do You Need?

  • Women: around 320 mg per day
  • Men: around 400 mg per day
  • More if you're stressed, training hard, or in perimenopause
  • If your food gives you ~200 mg (like mine does), supplementing with an extra 200 mg in the evening can be a total game-changer.

    💛 Final Thoughts

    Magnesium isn’t a magic pill.

But when your body is low on it (and most are), adding it in can feel magical.

It’s one of those small things that creates a big shift—in how you sleep, how you move, and how you feel day to day.

So if you’ve been feeling tight, wired, foggy, or just “off” lately…

This might be the simplest, smartest step you can take.

You deserve to feel calm, rested, and pain-free.
And sometimes, the solution is just one mineral away.

    Have a wonderful day ✨
