Seasonal depression, aka winter blues, is real but beatable!
As we transition into winter, the days get shorter and darker.
Cloudy skies, rainy days, cold weather…
All you want to do is curl up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate and watch TV.
Who has energy to exercise?
The only “workout” you feel like doing is stirring a cake mixture and putting it in the oven |
As tempting as it sounds to cozy up and wait for the sun to return in six months…
it comes with a price:
low energy
low mood
extra weight
guilt
even lower mood…and the cycle continues
So how do you break out of this winter trap?
How do you actually combat the seasonal depression?
Here’s what works for me
1. Dynamic yoga flow first thing in the morning
It’s my go-to way to start the day when everything feels heavy and slow.
Science shows that yoga, especially dynamic movement, triggers the release of serotonin and dopamine, the same “feel-good” hormones that fight depression and boost motivation.
Even 10–15 minutes is enough to warm up your body, wake up your energy, and change your mood for the rest of the day.

2. Meditation daily
Right after my yoga, I do 10 minutes of meditation.
Neuroscience shows that daily meditation strengthens the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain that controls mood and focus) and lowers cortisol, the stress hormone.
It’s like mental sunlight, keeps your thoughts clear and positive even on the darkest days.

3. Strength training 3 times per week
I usually train around sunset, either at the gym or at home if the weather is bad.
Exercise increases endorphins and body temperature, both proven to ease seasonal depression.
It also gives structure to my evenings - workout, shower, dinner - and I sleep like a baby after.

4. Prioritize protein
Protein isn’t just for muscle, it’s the foundation for neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which directly affect your mood.
Aim for a source of protein at every meal: eggs, fish, Greek yogurt, tofu, chicken.
It keeps your blood sugar steady, your cravings under control, and your mood more stable.

Takeaway
Winter can be tough on the body and the mind.
But you don’t need to wait for spring to feel alive again.
A few consistent daily actions can make a massive difference in how you feel, move, and think.
Move your body, eat well, keep a routine.
And by the time the sun comes back you’ll already feel lighter, stronger, and more vibrant than ever
Have a wonderful day
